"CYCLONE" BY HAIRPIN

"REARRANGE" IS THE SIXTH SINGLE BY HAIRPIN DUE OUT OCTOBER 6TH. IT FEATURES MASSIVE, CAUSTIC GUITAR RIFFS, SKITTISH DRUMS, A UNIQUE GROOVE, AND A MASSIVE CHORUS. IT'S HEAVILY INSPIRED, BUT YOU HAVEN'T HEARD A SONG LIKE IT. "REARRANGE" WAS FULLY WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY HAIRPIN IN BAND MEMBER ALEX MCGOURTY'S HOME STUDIO, AND WAS MIXED BY CLAUDIUS MITTENDORFER.

"CYCLONE" IS THE FOURTH SONG OF AN EP THAT WILL BE RELEASED MAY 23RD BY HAIRPIN.

CYCLONE IS OUT APRIL 26TH.

THE STORY

CYCLONE WAS THE EASIEST TRACK WE EVER DID.

IT CAME ABOUT AT FIRST IN PRACTICE WHEN JACOB STARTED PLAYING THE DRUM BEAT IN THE SONG AND COUTO IMMEDIATELY PLAYED THE BASSLINE IN RESPONSE. NATE WAS SINGING THE HOOK MOMENTS LATER. EVERYBODY HAD THEIR PARTS TOGETHER BUT ME IN THAT FIRST JAM!

WE USUALLY RECORD OUR PRACTICES TO MAKE SURE WE’RE SOUNDING TIGHT, AND SO IT WAS BY CHANCE THAT I WAS RECORDING WHEN THE BAND DECIDED TO IMPROVISE THAT JAM. WHEN I SLEPT THAT NIGHT IT WAS STUCK IN MY HEAD, SO WHEN I WOKE IN THE MORNING I CHOPPED UP THE PRACTICE RECORDING TRACKS AND USED SOME AI STEM SEPARATION TOOLS TO CUT THE DRUMS OUT THAT JACOB PLAYED. I QUANTIZED IT, LOOPED IT, SAMPLE-REPLACED THE HITS, AND STARTED PUTTING EVERYBODY ELSE'S PARTS IN. AFTER THAT, I RECORDED ABOUT 40 TOTALLY DIFFERENT GUITAR RIFFS, AND THEN THE ENTIRE WORKDAY I SENT CLIPS OF EACH TO THE BAND – “HOW BOUT THIS? OK … HOW ABOUT THIS?”

WE COULDN’T REALLY DECIDE SO I LEFT IT FOR A BIT, THINKING I HAD FAILED IN SPITE OF ALL THE EFFORT. BUT WHEN I WOKE THE NEXT DAY, TWO OF THE RIFFS KEPT PLAYING IN MY HEAD, SO I PICKED THOSE FROM THE BUNCH. I LOVE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM TOO – THEY’RE THE SAME RIFF BUT PUSHED AROUND THE GRID, BASICALLY. I THINK THAT’S WHY I EVENTUALLY RESPONDED TO IT, EVEN THOUGH THEY’RE SO SIMPLE.

SO WE HAD THE BONES TO THIS SONG IN ABOUT THREE DAYS. THEN NATE TOOK IT FROM THERE. IT WOULDN’T BE SUCH A SPECIAL SONG IF HE HADN’T FIT SUCH SOLID MELODIES OVER IT. IT’S A FEW OF MY FAVORITES OF HIS, WHICH IS SAYING A LOT – I DON’T THINK I’M BIASED WHEN I SAY THAT NATE’S MELODY SELECTION IS SUPER INDIVIDUAL AND DISTINCTIVE. IT’S HARD TO DRAW COMPARISONS BETWEEN HOW HIS VOCALS SOUND AND OTHERS IN THE GENRE – THERE’S NOT A LOT LIKE IT.
